Counselling individuals through Separation and Divorce

Separation and divorce is most often a time of conflict and upheaval. There is sadness, fear, and uncertainty. With so many unknowns, and the potential that a Judge will make important decisions impacting your future and the future of your children, it is important to have an outlet to work through these emotions. You will be asked to make important decisions, and working through your emotions with the support of a therapist can help you to feel more clear headed and confident. It is important to take care of yourself and your mental health.  As a former family lawyer, I have an in depth understanding of the many challenges of the legal system, and the profound impact it can have on our lives and well-being.

The end of a relationship or marriage is similar to a death, and often involves feelings of grief and loss.  There will be a variety of emotions involved when you are in the process of separation and divorce, and this will also be influenced by whether the decision to separate was yours, your partners, or mutual.  In relationships where there was infidelity or another type of betrayal, emotions may be even more confusing or overwhelming.  Recognizing what you are feeling and accepting that it is ok to feel all of these things is important, although it can be difficult.  Add on to this the financial strain that arises when one household becomes two, as well as potential litigation, and it is no surprise that many individuals going through separation feel overwhelmed and alone.  Therapists provide emotional support and guidance in developing new coping and communication skills, as well as helping you better understand yourself and your unique needs in relationships.

If you are navigating the separation and divorce process and are looking for support, I can help.
